Gethsemane Chapel
Гефсиманская часовня · Գեթսեմանի մատուռ
Gethsemane Chapel stood in the historical Shahar district of Yerevan, on the ground where the Yerevan Opera Theater now stands, along what is today Tumanyan street. It was pulled down in the 1920s to clear the site for the theater's construction.
An old Yerevan cemetery surrounded the chapel, its tombstones carved in cradle and coffin shapes. Some researchers believe the chapel itself replaced an earlier structure: a small domed church built between the 11th and 13th centuries, said to have resembled the Katoghike Church of the Holy Mother of God.
Nothing of the chapel remains above ground today.
The site lies in Yerevan itself, in the area of the former Shahar district — about 1 km north-northeast of the city center (straight-line).
