Gyulagarak Sanctuary, Lori, Armenia

Gyulagarak Sanctuary

Гюлагаракские сосны · Գյուլագարակի արգելավայր

Gyulagarak Sanctuary exists to protect one thing: a relict pine forest, a stand of trees surviving here as an isolated remnant rather than part of a larger woodland. It sits on the southern slope of the Lejan mountain massif, near the village of Gyulagarak in Lori region. The reserve was established in 1958.

It covers 2,586 hectares, running through the valley of the Karhanqjur river on the left bank of the Dzoraget. Elevations range from 1,300 to 1,850 meters. That's a wide band, and it shapes what grows where.

There's no visitor infrastructure here. It functions as a conservation zone, not a tourist stop. Anyone planning to go should check locally in Odzun or Gyulagarak for current access conditions.

The sanctuary lies in Lori region, near the village of Gyulagarak and the town of Odzun, roughly 100 km north of Yerevan.

At 1,300 to 1,850 meters, conditions can differ sharply from the valley floor below — worth checking locally before heading up outside summer.
