Hnevank Monastery Complex

Монастырь Хневанк · Հնեվանք

Hnevank is a monastery complex built in the 7th century, set on a hill within a gorge near Kurtan village in Lori province, close to where the Dzoraget and Gargar rivers meet.

For two centuries, from the 12th into the 13th, it functioned as a Chalcedonian monastery — a different line of church practice than the Armenian Apostolic Church that had built it.

What remains today is half-ruined: the traces of three churches, a gavit (columned entrance hall attached to a church), and remnants of residential and utility buildings that once supported the community here.

Hnevank sits in Lori province near Kurtan village, roughly 86 km north of Yerevan as the crow flies.
