Holy Mother of God Church replaced an older wooden church from the 1500s, rebuilt in stone in 1767 under Catholicos (head of the Armenian Church) Simeon I of Yerevan. It stands in central Vagharshapat, about 200 meters north of the walls enclosing the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, giving the town its own parish church just outside the monastery's perimeter.
In 1986, under Catholicos Vazgen I, the church was renovated and a bell tower was added.
The church is in Vagharshapat, Armavir region, about 19 km west of Yerevan in a straight line.
