Horomayr Monastery

монастырь Оромайр · Հոռոմայր

Horomayr Monastery is a medieval monastic complex built directly into the cliff face above the Debed River, about 1 km south of Odzun village in Lori province. Its setting is the point of the place as much as any single structure — the buildings sit on ledges cut into rock, overlooking the gorge below.

There's no easy front door here. Visitors reach it by climbing up from the highway that runs along the Debed River, by hiking south across the cliffs from the last switchback on the road into Odzun, or by descending the cliff face south of the village itself — the shortest route but the steepest one. Whichever way you choose, getting to Horomayr is part of the experience, not an inconvenience before it.

Beyond its location and structure, detailed history of the complex — founding date, patrons, later use — isn't settled in the sources available here, so it's worth asking locally in Odzun if you want the fuller story before you go.

Horomayr Monastery is in Lori province, just south of Odzun village, roughly 95 km north of Yerevan as the crow flies. Odzun itself is the nearest town and the usual starting point for reaching the cliffs below it.

The approach involves climbing along or down a cliff face, so wet, icy, or muddy conditions after rain or in winter make the routes considerably harder — worth factoring in before you set out.
