Okonakhach

Оконахач · Օկոնախաչ

Okonakhach is an Armenian Apostolic church built in 1863, set in the upper part of the Khachaghbyur gorge near Enokavan village in Tavush region. Little written record of the church has survived.

In front of the building stands a winged khachkar (carved cross-stone), dated to the 12th or 13th century — older than the church itself and the main clue to a longer history at this spot.

The church sits in Tavush region near Ijevan, about 90 km north-northeast of Yerevan as the crow flies.
