Paytasar

Пайтасар · Պայտասար

Paytasar is a 3,177-meter peak in the Geghama mountain range whose slopes carry petroglyphs (rock carvings) dating from the 7th to 2nd millennia BC. The mountain sits about 3.5 km southwest of Azhdahak, formed through volcanic activity, and has a sloped crater in a horseshoe shape. Older sources called it Gegharadasar.

Some of the carvings depict animal species no longer found in the region, a detail supported by fossil remains found elsewhere in the Armenian highland. Many images and image groups reflect early worship of celestial bodies and natural phenomena.

Researchers treat the Paytasar petroglyphs as a secondary source for understanding the economy, daily life, and religious beliefs of the highland's ancient inhabitants.

Paytasar sits in Kotayk region's Geghama mountain range, roughly 35 km east of Yerevan (straight-line).
