Republic Square, Yerevan, Armenia

Republic Square

площадь Республики · Հանրապետության հրապարակ

Republic Square is where Yerevan keeps its government. The first and third buildings of the Government of Armenia stand here, and so does the National History Museum of Armenia. It's the address that matters most in the city.

A metro station carries the same name underground, in the Kentron district. It opened on December 26, 1981. Before 1992 it was called Lenin Square — the old name dropped along with the political system that gave it.

Exits open onto Nalbandyan Street, Aram Street, and Main Avenue. Surface from any of them and the museum, the government buildings, or Vernissage — the city's handicraft fair — are all close by.

Republic Square sits in the Kentron district, right at the meeting point of Nalbandyan Street, Aram Street, and Main Avenue — effectively the middle of Yerevan.
