Saint Sargis Church of Tsovinar, Gegharkunik, Armenia

Saint Sargis Church of Tsovinar

Церковь Сурб Саркис · Սուրբ Սարգիս եկեղեցի

Saint Sargis is a small church built between the 12th and 13th centuries, standing without a dome on a promontory above a ravine south of Tsovinar village, near the southern shore of Lake Sevan in Gegharkunik. Its roof runs almost flat, covered in living grass rather than tile or stone.

Some accounts describe a 20th-century rebuilding. More likely, only the roof and parts of the stonework were repaired rather than reconstructed.

Medieval graves surround the church in a small cemetery. Down in the ravine below, there's a spring and a cave.

The church stands in Gegharkunik province, just south of Tsovinar village near Lake Sevan's southern shore, ~85 km east of Yerevan (straight-line).
