Vanevan Monastery

монастырь Ваневан · Վանեվանի վանք

Vanevan Monastery's main church, dedicated to Saint Grigor, went up in 903. Prince Shapuh Bagratuni and his sister Mariam commissioned it — both siblings of King Smbat I. The building sits along a gorge south of Artsvanist village, southeast of Lake Sevan in Gegharkunik.

A second church closes the complex's southern end, possibly built in the same years. A gavit (vestibule connecting the two) was added later.

King Gagik I of the Bagratid dynasty restored Saint Grigor in the late 10th century, and a surrounding wall went up during that work.

Vanevan Monastery is in Gegharkunik Province, near Artsvanist village southeast of Lake Sevan, about 85 km east of Yerevan in a straight line.
