Shamb Reservoir
Шамбское водохранилище · Շամբի ջրմբ
Shamb Reservoir sits on the Vorotan River near Shamb village, at roughly 1,350 meters, and has stored water since 1970. It collects the discharge from the Shamb hydropower plant along with the Vorotan's own flow, then releases it in controlled amounts toward the Tatev hydropower plant downstream. Some of the stored water is also drawn off for irrigation.
The lake covers 1.26 square kilometers and holds 13.6 million cubic meters of water, of which 11.8 million cubic meters is usable. Its dam is a rockfill structure with a sand-clay core running 107 meters long and rising to a maximum height of 47 meters. Water is let out through a tower-style intake built into the left bank, feeding a tunnel that runs without pressure, while excess floodwater has its own outlet: a shaft-type spillway of the "Margaritka" design plus six tunnel openings.
The reservoir is stocked with ishkhan (Sevan trout) and karmrakhayt (brown trout), among other fish.
Shamb Reservoir lies in Syunik region near the town of Sisian, on the Vorotan River close to Shamb village — about 159 km east-southeast of Yerevan in a straight line.
