Shikahogh State Reserve
Шикахогский заповедник · Շիկահողի արգելոց
Shikahogh State Reserve, established in 1958, protects roughly 10,330 hectares of forest on the northern slopes of the Meghri mountain range in Syunik province, making it Armenia's second-largest forest reserve. It spans the upper basins of the Tsav and Shikahogh rivers, with elevations ranging from 700 to 2,800 meters.
The reserve was set up to preserve stands of oak, hornbeam, beech, zelkova (keni, a deciduous hardwood), and plane tree, along with the wildlife living among them. Its remote location and the care shown by residents of nearby villages are credited with sparing it from the heavy deforestation that hit Armenia's forests after the Soviet collapse.
The ground is broken up by ridges and ravines, cut through by mountain streams and mineral springs.
The reserve lies in Syunik province, roughly 214 km southeast of Yerevan in a straight line.
