Teghenyats Monastery

Монастырь Техеняц · Թեղենյաց վանք

Teghenyats Monastery stands on the slope of Mount Teghenis, near Buzhakan village in Kotayk region. It sits in a clearing ringed by elm trees — tegh is the Armenian word for elm, and that's likely where the name comes from.

The site once belonged to Nig gavar (historical district), an administrative division that predates today's regional map. Kotayk region didn't exist yet when this land carried that name.

Beyond that, little is documented. No confirmed founding date, no record of who built it, no clear picture of what's still standing. Worth checking locally before you go — for the road in and the current state of the structures.

Teghenyats Monastery is in Kotayk region, close to Buzhakan village, with Charentsavan the nearest town of any size. Straight-line, it's roughly 34 km north of Yerevan.
