Zorats Karer

Зорац Карер · Զորաց Քարեր

Zorats Karer is a field of upright stone slabs on a plateau about three kilometers north of Sisian, in Syunik, at roughly 1,770 meters above sea level. Some stones stand plain and unmarked. Others carry a round hole cut near the top, and no one has settled what it was for. Walk between the rows and the layout feels deliberate rather than scattered. The site also goes by several other names — Carahunge, Dik-Dik Karer, Tsits Karer, and Karenish.

In 2004 the Armenian government listed the complex as an astronomical observatory. A number of scientists and researchers support that view. Others don't. Some argue the field is better read as a burial ground, and the disagreement runs through both academic and public discussion without a clear resolution.

International visitors often call it the 'Armenian Stonehenge,' a nickname based on the resemblance of standing stones rather than any established connection between the two sites. Zorats Karer is registered as a historical-cultural reserve, which gives it formal state protection.

Zorats Karer sits in Syunik province, on a plateau north of Sisian, roughly 147 km southeast of Yerevan as the crow flies.

At 1,770 meters, the plateau runs colder and windier than Sisian town below — worth an extra layer if you're visiting outside summer.
