Mozrov Cave
Мозров · Մոզրով
Mozrov Cave is Armenia's deepest known cave, and it didn't form the usual way — no river carved it out. Hot, mineral-rich water did, working through the rock from within over a very long stretch of geological time. It sits in Vayots Dzor, about 7 km from Areni, threading through a series of connected chambers rather than one long tunnel, and the whole system runs roughly 300 meters end to end.
Go inside and the walls do the talking. A crust of calcite crystal up to 10 cm thick coats the surfaces, and in places later mineral deposits have layered over it in uneven, almost sculptural forms, alongside a scattering of stalactites. It's the kind of place where the geology, not the view, is the payoff.
There's no lighting or marked trail on record, so treat it like any undeveloped cave: bring your own light, expect rough footing, and don't go in alone if you can help it.
Locally, Mozrov Cave is registered as a heritage monument under Arpi village's historical record, and it sits along the Arpi–Mozrov road.
Mozrov Cave lies in Vayots Dzor marz (province), about 7 km from Areni. Yerevan is roughly 85 km to the northwest of the cave. Road conditions and access are best checked locally.
How the Arpi–Mozrov road and the cave itself hold up through winter isn't documented, so it's worth checking locally before planning a cold-season visit.
