Ughtasar Petroglyphs
Петроглифы Ухтасара · Ժայռապատկերներ
Ughtasar Petroglyphs is a prehistoric rock-art site on Mount Ughtasar, near the town of Sisian in Syunik region. Thousands of individual images are carved into the stone here — it's the sheer number of them, spread across a prehistoric site, that draws people interested in early rock art.
The site sits in a border zone, straddling the line between Syunik and the Shahumyan district of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). Since November 25, 2020, this same ground has also marked a stretch of the Armenian-Azerbaijani line of contact — worth knowing before you plan a trip out here, since the area borders an active frontier.
The petroglyphs are in Syunik region, near the town of Sisian, roughly 142 km east-southeast of Yerevan in a straight line.
