Zangezur Sanctuary

Зангезур · Զանգեզուր արգելավայր

Zangezur Sanctuary is a protected area in Syunik region, established on October 15, 2009. It covers 17,368.77 hectares across the southern slopes of the Bargushat range and the eastern slopes of the Zangezur range, spanning elevations of 2,600 to 3,904 meters.

The sanctuary was created to preserve meadow-steppe, subalpine, and alpine ecosystems — the zones that shift from grassland to high-mountain terrain as elevation climbs.

The sanctuary lies in Syunik region near the town of Tatev, roughly 177 km southeast of Yerevan in a straight line.

With terrain running from 2,600 to 3,904 meters, conditions change sharply with elevation and season, and snow cover affects the higher ground for much of the year.
